What unhurried work asks of a person

Hands can be taught in a few months. Stillness cannot. The therapists who are best at this do very little for the first ten minutes and are not uneasy about it; they can let a silence stand rather than fill it, hold one pressure long past the point where most people would vary it for the sake of variety, and read from breathing alone whether the pace should slow further or stay where it is. It is closer to patience than to skill, and it is the rarer thing.

That is the reason every therapist here was met in person before she joined, and the reason the photographs on this site were taken by us rather than sent in. Ten minutes in a room with someone tells you whether she is comfortable being still. A portfolio tells you what she looked like on a good day.

Forty-five work with us. Twenty-four nationalities are represented and everyone is between twenty-one and thirty, though those figures matter less as statistics than as a practical fact: the choice at four in the morning is a real choice rather than whoever is left.

Choosing one

Most people begin with a photograph, which is a fair place to begin and a poor place to stop. Language deserves more weight than it usually gets. A session held in a language you think in rather than translate into settles sooner than one that is not, because nothing has to be worked out first. Timing deserves weight too: a therapist arriving at the start of her night is a different proposition from one arriving at the end of it, and we know which is which.
